Where to look

You are not forgetting them. You are looking in one place.

Almost everyone checks their bank app and concludes that is the whole picture. It is usually about half of it.

A subscription has to be billed through something, and there are only a handful of somethings. Knowing the list turns a vague worry into a short, finite search.

The five routes

1. Directly on your card

The provider charges your card every cycle. Visible in your bank's recurring payments view, under the provider's own name.

2. Through the App Store

Apple is the merchant. Your bank may show one bundled charge covering several apps with no breakdown.

3. Through Google Play

The same arrangement on the other side, and a separate list to check if you have ever owned an Android device.

4. Through PayPal

Automatic payments, with their own page, their own cancel route, and no presence in the first three lists.

5. Direct invoice or e-mail receipt

Smaller providers and anything business-flavoured. Often the only trace is a receipt in your inbox.
